1. The 6 to 12-Month Mark: Research and Reality Check

Before packing any bags, you need to define your "why" and "where." Portugal offers diverse lifestyles, from the bustling tech hubs of Lisbon and Porto to the tranquil retreats of the Alentejo or the Silver Coast.

Financial Planning: Audit your savings. Consider exchange rates if you are coming from outside the Eurozone and research the average cost of living in your target region.
Lifestyle Scouting: If possible, plan a "scouting trip." Seeing a neighborhood in person is very different from seeing it on Instagram.

2. The 4 to 6-Month Mark: The Paperwork Begins

This is the most critical phase for a legal transition. You cannot move to Portugal as a resident without the proper legal foundation.

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal): This is your Portuguese tax number. You need it for everything—from opening a bank account to signing a lease.
Visa Selection: Are you a retiree with passive income? The D7 Visa is likely your best bet. Are you a remote worker? Look into the D8 (Digital Nomad Visa). If you’re starting a business, the D2 Visa is designed for you.
