The route commonly known as the D7 may be relevant to retirees and to people living from income connected with assets, investments or intellectual property. It is a residence route rather than a short-stay solution.
The name “D7” is widely used in practice, but suitability cannot be decided from income type alone. Your nationality, country of residence, intended move, household, accommodation, resources and supporting evidence all need to be considered.
What normally needs to be demonstrated
- A valid passport and the general documents required for a residence visa application
- The source, stability and availability of the resources relied upon
- Suitable evidence of accommodation for the relevant stage of the process
- Criminal-record, travel-insurance and other supporting documents where applicable
- The relationship and resources relevant to accompanying family members
- Compliance with the instructions of the competent Portuguese consular post or external application centre
The exact documents, financial reference values, formalities and place of submission must be confirmed for the applicant’s circumstances and at the time of application. Local consular instructions may add procedural detail.
A route with two connected stages
- Prepare and submit the residence visa application through the competent Portuguese consular channel.
- If the visa is granted, use it to enter Portugal within its validity and follow the instructions attached to it.
- Complete the residence-permit stage in Portugal with the competent authority.
- Maintain and renew the residence status subject to the rules and requirements applicable at that time.
A residence visa is not itself the final residence permit. A visa decision and a residence-permit decision are separate authority decisions.
